In 2005, San Francisco Mayor, Gavin Newsom created the Mayor’s Biotech Advisory Council. The first task of the Council was to develop and secure a proposal to bring the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine to the City. In May 2005, San Francisco was successfully chosen as the location for the Institute. Today, MayBAC includes more than 50 life sciences companies based in San Francisco supported by service companies and consultants dedicated to building the City’s life sciences industry.
MayBAC’s membership includes many of the luminaries in the biotechnology and life sciences field, including leaders in academia, law, finance and the corporate sector. “MayBAC can help the City by serving as San Francisco’s ambassadors to the industry,” said Steve Burrill, “We will also provide advice to the Mayor and other policy-makers on initiatives and policies they can implement to facilitate expansion of this key sector in the City.”
The Biotech Advisory Council is supported by five committees each working on specific issues to further promote and support San Francisco’s growing life sciences community.
